Name: Robin Matlock

Robin is a Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer at VMware.

As the CMO, Robin leads all aspects of the Global Marketing organization, which includes Corporate Marketing, Partner, Segment, and Field Marketing.

Prior to joining VMware, Robin was an Executive Vice President and General Manager at Imperva.  She has also led go-to-market teams for McAfee, Entercept, and Symantec.

Robin has always been someone that I have been comfortable approaching. She is a great listener, gives very good feedback and direction, and works very hard to minimize boundaries that might exist across a large company.

Questions Interview:

I ask Robin three questions that are specific to her.

  1. In your role as CMO, what are you responsible for, and how are you measured?
  2. You have been through a number of major technology transitions during your career. What have been the biggest personal challenges through all of this, and how have you worked through them?
  3. You went to school for Economics and Music. How have these prepared you for your career in high tech?

I then ask Robin the same six questions that I ask all interviewees – in a lightning-round format.

  1. What’s the most important factor you consider when hiring someone?
  2. Who was your most effective boss, and what made him or her stand out?
  3. What was the most difficult transition that you made in your career?
  4. How do you approach helping someone with their career development or path?
  5. What tools and tricks do you use to find work-life balance?
  6. How do you go about building relationships with your peers and other leaders in the company?

I really enjoyed all of Robin’s answers, especially her openness and honesty when it came to major transitions that she has gone through during her career.

“I think my biggest takeaway is how I endured and actually prospered.”

And I really love the way Robin talks about finding your work-life balance.

“I don’t think you find it. I think you make it.”

I know that you will get a lot out of listening to my interview with Robin.

Career Path:

I then asked Robin to share her career path. Start at the beginning and talk us through the path that you took, and the decisions that you made along the way that led you to where you are today.

Robin does a nice job of talking through the decisions she made as her career progressed. I think you will enjoy her journey!
