Thank you to everyone who gave their input on their favorite manager interview questions. Here are the results. I will begin to use them starting in August.
Here they are in rank order of most chosen.
- What’s the most important factor you consider when hiring someone?
- Who was your most effective boss, and what made him or her stand out?
- What was the most difficult transition that you made in your career?
- How do you approach helping someone with their career development or path?
- What tools and tricks do you use to find work-life balance?
- How do you go about building relationships with your peers and other leaders in the company?
I will probe more deeply as they answer the questions – looking to get as much information as possible. And I will ask at least one question that is specific to the person that I am interviewing.
For completeness, here are the questions that I used for the first four interviews. Some are the same as, or similar to those above.
- What tools and tricks do you use to find work-life balance?
- How do you prioritize your work?
- Tell me about an example where you had to let someone go for underperforming.
- If you had to give advice to someone setting up a team in another country, what would it be?
- What was the most difficult transition that you made in your career?
- Do you have any book recommendations that you would like to share?
- What are the one or two things that you want to tell me that I didn’t ask?
Thank you again for your help!
